Commercial Iron-Air Batteries With 100-Hour Storage

Form Energy announced its commercial iron-air battery that is capable of delivering electricity for 100 hours at a cost significantly lower than lithium ion batteries.

Battery technologies are really having their time when it comes to research activities. Form Energy announced a rechargeable iron-air battery capable of delivering electricity for 100 hours at a cost significantly lower than lithium ion batteries. The basic idea of this battery is it takes oxygen from the air, uses it to convert iron inside the battery to rust, later converting it back to iron again. Converting iron back and forth allows the energy that is stored in the battery to be stored longer than conventional batteries.

The iron-air batteries are very big and heavy to be used in applications like electric vehicles. Each battery is approximately the size of a washing machine and these batteries are meant to be hooked together in massive grids capable of storing enormous amounts of electricity for days at a time.

Mateo Jaramillo, CEO and Co-founder of Form Energy, said, “We conducted a broad review of available technologies and have reinvented the iron-air battery to optimize it for multi-day energy storage for the electric grid. With this technology, we are tackling the biggest barrier to deep decarbonization: making renewable energy available when and where it’s needed, even during multiple days of extreme weather or grid outages.”
